Jesus Calling Review (Book By Sarah Young)

Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His presence is a 365-day Devotional. In this book, Sarah Young lets the voice of Jesus speak through her.  Young’s many years of Bible study, devotional prayer, and personal reflection come to fruition in this very personal interaction with the Lord.

The book is dedicated to Young’s mother who read the author’s writings every day as she lay dying of cancer.

For the Faithful who seek a daily inspiration, Sarah Young provides the dialogue with Jesus that invites prayerful thought and meditation, especially in difficult times.

“Sometimes My blessings come to you in mysterious ways: through pain and trouble. At such times you can know My goodness only through your trust in Me. Understanding will fail you, but trust will keep you close to Me.”

Sarah Young spurs controversy in this book

The book is not without controversy. Traditional Catholics may have difficulty accepting the author’s narrative technique of having Jesus speak her words, and it is quite disconcerting to some.

But for spending quiet time with one’s inner self in deep contemplation of the Lord’s messages and a way to get through tough times or look at life in meaningful ways, Jesus Calling is an exercise in thoughtful PRAYER that can inspire readers every day.

Sarah Young believes that Jesus is speaking to her, and wants to speak to you through her. She interprets what she hears and then has Jesus speak directly to you in this book. The messages are delivered from Jesus’ point of view.

“Tomorrow is busy worrying about itself; don’t get tangled up in its worry-webs. Trust Me one day at a time.”

Jesus Calling is a journey of love

Sarah Young said she felt Jesus’ presence in a special way when she stood alone in the woods on a cold winter day in an Alpine village in France. She mentions the spiritual experience in the introduction to her book. As she silently looked at all the beauty of the Alps around her. She knew the Lord was with her in a special way as He whispered to her.

Sarah Young and her husband were missionaries for many years, spending much time in Japan and Australia. Their journey brought them in contact with the poor and suffering and those who hungered for Jesus’ guidance and comfort.

Based on these experiences and her own contemplations, Young wrote her thoughts in a journal and this became a source for her future writings. Her monologues became widely read books on the teachings of Jesus.

At some point in her journey, her spiritual fervor has led her to begin thinking about how the Lord might speak her own thoughts to others.  That unique perspective is what has driven this book, Jesus Calling.

The book delivers the comfort of Jesus in a steady stream of daily spiritual prompts. It is a way for the lost souls of the Church to find footing and reassurance that the Lord is still with them.

It gives the companionship in building the trust that Jesus is asking for. Spending a few moments with Him each day in prayerful meditation will bring you closer to Him. Trusting in Jesus will enable you to give your sufferings to Him so that He can comfort you with His peace.

“IF YOU LEARN TO TRUST ME—really trust Me—with your whole being, then nothing can separate you from My Peace.”

This is what some readers wrote about Jesus Calling

“The wording is speaking directly to you & is fully encouraging, reassuring & 100% scripture related & supported. If you are looking for an encouraging daily devotional & tend to like the style of other daily devotionals like Christine Caine I think you will find this encouraging.”

Deb Ball (Reviewed in the United Kingdom)

“This wonderful Christian devotional book was given to me as a gift by a dear friend and I have found it immensely uplifting and non-preachy. Each daily reading is based on 2 or 3 Bible passages and is actually the author’s wonderful interpretation of the message there and reads as though Jesus himself is talking to you. I am on my second year cycle of the readings which I find incredibly personal and meaningful. I enjoyed the book so much I gave my mother a copy last Christmas and it’s lovely to know that we are reading the same passage at the same time, which we sometimes later discuss.”

Anita Dow, The Martian Diaries sequel to The War Of The Worlds (Reviewed in the United Kingdom)

“I was introduced to this book by my councillor following the death of my partner last year. The daily readings are encouraging and often feel as though they are written especially for me. The scripture references, which are in italics in the daily readings, are listed at the bottom of each page. I would highly recommend this book.”
