The Catholic faith is built on, well, Faith. Remember that much of the Bible isn’t just stories. It’s made up of writing by prophets.

God promises, quotes are written down by men filled with the Holy Spirit, and those promises are kept.

Most of God’s promises are things that we need to wait for. The Kingdom of Heaven, the second coming, that God will take care of all of our needs. It can be hard to keep faith in these promises.

Fortunately, many such “God Promises Quotes” are preserved in the Bible for us to read when we feel like we’re losing faith.

A quick note

I’d like to make a quick clerical note before we get started. I’m using the Revised Standard Version – a specific translation of the Bible.

If you’re following in your Bible, some verses may sound a little different. But I’ve included the verses so that you can find them.

God’s greatest promise

There are many of God’s promises, quotes, and verses about God’s faithfulness in the Bible. However, there is one overarching promise that is a recurring theme throughout nearly the whole of the Bible.

In Genesis, God promises Abram:

“I am God Almighty, walk before me and be blameless (…), and I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant to be God to you and to your descendants after you.”

Gen. 17:1-7

This is a significant promise because when God made it, Abram was 99 years old and had no children. But He who promised is faithful. God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, and his wife bore children.

He who promised is faithful. Are you?

Over time, Abraham’s children became the kings of Israel. Then, God promises quotes reportedly given to King David that,

“If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their hearts and with all their soul, there shall not fail you a man on the throne of Israel.”

1 Kings. 2:4

If you know your Bible history, you know that the Kings of Israel didn’t keep up their end of the bargain, and Israel was conquered by the Babylonians. Many of the Psalms were written during this period, and the author asks,

“Has (God’s) steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time?”

Psalm 77:8

How Christ fulfilled God’s greatest promise

The Bible is split into Old and New testaments based on the idea that God’s love had not forever ceased. Instead, Christ came to offer the world another chance. Many of the “God promises” quotes in the New Testament point to this. Jesus himself tells his apostles,

“Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you,”

Luke 24:49

Learning from verses about God’s faithfulness

When we feel down and out, it can be easy to think that God has forgotten us. This is never the case. Hopefully, the “God’s Promises” quotes in this article have illustrated two important things. 

The first is that He who promised is faithful. God’s promises are kept, but sometimes it takes longer than we would like. The second is that God expects us to keep up our part of the bargain as well. 

Waiting for God’s promises and trying to live a life worthy of them is the cornerstone of the faith. As St. Paul writes of Abraham,

“No distrust made (Abraham) waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what He had promised.”

Romans. 4:20-21
